“As a black woman, our hair has always been a societal issue. I used to wear my hair relaxed – more European, but it destroyed my scalp. Then I started to wear it naturally. It was a difficult transition not only for my hair but for people’s perception of me; from my family and coworkers. Some people interpret wearing hair naturally as a political statement or as unprofessional. As if the natural state of our hair is wrong. I still feel the judgment, but ultimately I’m happy with my decision. It is good to see it has become more popular in mainstream society.
